James Otis declares that, “taxation without representation is tyranny.”

Otis uses the phrase in defending the right of the General Court to make decisions regarding spending. Despite the protests of Otis and others, however, Nathaniel Philbrick later writes, “the American colonists were some of the most prosperous, least-taxed people in the Western world.”
